A WOLF AT THE DOOR is book 3 in the Jesse James
Dawson novels.
Jesse Dawson went from a normal man with a wife and
daughter to a champion. When his brother sold his soul to a
demon, he has to help him, even though he doesn't believe in
such things as demons and magic. OK so maybe things aren't
exactly as they seem to be. Now with the help of a
Ukrainian named Ivan Zelenko he's learning what he needs to
survive. There is so much to learn to be a champion, fight
demons, not lose all your friends who come under fire and
scariest of all is finding out it's possible he will become
a father again.
Axel is a demon that Jesse owes a favor to for helping him
with his brother's brothers little problem. He comes the
day after Thanksgiving and asks that he do the favor now.
It seems simple enough, though Jesse has learned along that
way that nothing is simple; Axel wants Jesse to guard the
famous actress Gretchen Keene until New Years. Didn't take
long to realize that he was right, it isn't simple. Ms.
Keene is soulless, but that really isn't the problem, she
sold it to stay beautiful and famous her whole life. The
part that makes her important is the fact that part of her
contract was to collect other souls. To date 276 souls
currently belong to her. That many souls are very tempting
to other demons because with that many it adds up to a lot
of power. The demon who made the contract gave her a large
loophole, he didn't name himself as her master, so she
could name anyone her master and they would be rewarded
with all those souls upon her death.
A WOLF AT THE DOOR is filled with a lot of action, magic
everywhere and not all of it the good kind and on top of it
Jesse is trying very hard to keep as much normal in his
life as possible. It all makes for one great story. His
sense of humor is infectious and his kick ass attitude
makes him the ideal champion. The secondary characters are
varied with distinctive personalities that play off of
Jesse's perfectly. I especially loved Ivan's broken English
as he tries to teach Jesse, it makes him sound a little
like Yoda. I found the ending amazingly thought out and
also lends to a number of new story lines for this series. I
would suggest that readers get the previous books just to
be brought up to date, but they are not necessary to
enjoying this book. This is one urban fantasy book that
will please any reader of the genre.
STAR STRUCK Jesse James Dawson was once an ordinary man until he discovered that demons were real, and fighting them meant putting his own soul on the line. His new case is a beauty: Gretchen Keene, a Hollywood starlet who's become an unwitting catalyst in an all-out demon war. It's not her soul Jesse needs to protect, but the two-hundred-and-seventy-six others she's carting around--all the souls sold to spend just one night with the blonde bombshell. That's a lot of baggage, although it might explain her meteoric rise to fame. And it's all up for grabs by the demon world. All Jesse has to do is keep her safe until New Years. Sounds easy. But darkness is casting a nasty shadow in the California sun--a new unseen enemy is closing in and leaving Jesse to wonder, how do you fight something you can't see coming?
