A woman's body is found near a bridge over the Charles
River in Boston on a Saturday night and the press is
convinced this is the work of a serial killer. Two weeks
ago another woman's body was found near the Longfellow
Bridge, but Boston PD Detective Jake Brogan does not think
these two murders are the work of a serial killer despite
the similarities.
On-air television investigative reporter Jane Ryland has
just lost a slander case with a million dollar damage
judgement, against Jane's employer, going to grocery
magnate, Arthur Vick. Jane knows Vick is guilty, and
unless she can get her informant to come forth, Vick-the-
Creep will keep on abusing women. Channel Eleven finds a
reason to let Jane go, and soon afterwards Jane is offered
a job at The Register, a small newspaper whose new editor,
Alex Wyatt, is an old friend of hers. Alex mentions that
Jake Brogan recommended her, and Jake is a very close
friend of Jane's. Matter of fact, if Jane's job and
Alex's job didn't present a conflict of interest, they
would be lovers.
Jane's first assignment is a puff piece with Moira
Lassiter, wife of Owen Lassiter who is running for a US
Senate seat against Eleanor "Ellie" Gable. Moira seems to
have disappeared, and Jane is unable to get any information
about her or an appointment with her through the Lassiter's
staff. Breaking protocol, Jane calls Moira direct and
sets up an appointment. Instead of an interview, Jane gets
a request from Moira -- find the other woman in Owen's life.
After a third body is found under another bridge, Jane is
itching to get back into investigative work, and does
footwork on her own. She is trying to find a woman that
is front and center in all the pictures of Owen's rallies,
and at the same time trying to convince Jake that the
second body found was killed by Arthur Vick since that
victim turned out to be Jane's confidential informant.
THE OTHER WOMAN is riveting, intriguing, and well worth the
read. The characters are very well defined, conversations
are interesting and intelligent, and the narrative is
clean, crisp and very easy to follow. This exciting story
has murder, dishonesty, betrayal, a smidgen of romance, and
explosive secrets. Lots of layers to this tale, and they
all come together and should be devoured like a scrumptious
cake.
Jane Ryland was a rising star in television news...until she
refused to reveal a source and lost everything. Now a
disgraced newspaper reporter, Jane isn't content to work on
her assigned puff pieces, and finds herself tracking down a
candidate's secret mistress just days before a pivotal
Senate election.
Detective Jake Brogan is investigating a possible serial
killer. Twice, bodies of unidentified women have been found
by a bridge, and Jake is plagued by a media swarm beginning
to buzz about a "bridge killer" hunting the young women of
Boston.
As the body count rises and election looms closer, it
becomes clear to Jane and Jake that their cases are
connected...and that they may be facing a ruthless killer
who
will stop at nothing to silence a scandal.
Dirty politics, dirty tricks, and a barrage of final twists,
The Other Woman is the first in an explosive new series by
Hank Phillippi Ryan. Seduction, betrayal, and
murder—it'll
take a lot more than votes to win this election.
