FRAGILE finds Luke Rafferty leaving the Army Rangers, with a shattered leg and psyche, as well as hopes of leaving the darker side of life for civilian peace. He becomes Dr. Rafferty in a hospital in Kentucky, not sure how he got there when he planned to return to Wyoming to be near his Dad and the ranch where he grew up. It might be the petite social worker Devon Manning who somehow keeps him there. She has also seen the grittier side of life and had actually been rescued by a social worker herself as a kid. Now she lives alone, dates little and worries about her "kids".
After a rather awkward, touch and go start they become a couple. Devon's memories of her past kept flaring up, until she realizes that Luke makes her feel safe and alive. And just when Luke is thinking forever, things ... frightening things ... start happening; missing items, a dead skunk in the yard and the feeling of being watched. The police are finally called in when someone breaks in, leaving something disgusting behind.
A list of parents is given to the cops who might have it in for Devon. Some people do take offense in being accused of child abuse and having their children taken from them and of course blame the social worker who has stepped in. Even though they take a lot of precautions to avoid her being alone, one of the parents gets to her; she fights back and though she can't remember how she manages to save herself, she survives the attack. They think it's over, but is it? Strange things continue to happen throwing the couple into continued turmoil with a surprise ending.
FRAGILE is a riveting storyline that tosses readers through every emotion possible until by the end you are exhausted and yet deeply exhilarated. In just a few pages you will see all the evil that man can do to one another, but you will also see love, honor and hope triumph over that evil. Devon and Luke have a lot of baggage from their pasts and at times that does seem to drag the storyline a little, but you also see that they overcome those pasts to care about each other in the now and forever. I loved this book. It will really keep you up reading as you tell yourself, "I will just finish this chapter" and in the wee hours of the morning you're finally able to put it away finished because there is no way to put it down until the last word.
