Annika Bengtzon is a crime reporter at a bustling tabloid in Stockholm, Sweden. She struggles daily with balancing her career, motherhood, and marriage. She is married to Thomas, who is working on anti-terrorism/wiretapping legislation. Annika and Thomas are constantly at odds -- they have very different views on marriage, on raising children, on life in general. The strain in their marriage is evident from the very beginning of the book. Thomas's work on anti- terrorism legislations only intensifies their already crumbling marriage.
The book begins with Annika covering the Nobel banquet and witnessing a murder. As a key witness to the crime, she is put on lock-down by the police and not allowed to report anything she witnessed. This puts her in an extremely difficult position with work that eventually results in her being put on suspension. While Annika is on suspension, she begins researching the Nobel murder on her own and uncovers a conspiracy that goes way beyond what anyone had suspected.
LAST WILL is well-written crime thriller. It is the sixth book in the Annika Bengtzon series by Liza Marklund which has been translated to English. I read this as a stand- alone book, without reading any of the prior books in the series and found it a little difficult to get into the story at first. There were definite references to things that had happened in previous books that I didn't understand. It is not necessary to ready the previous books, but I do think it would be helpful. As a fan of crime thrillers, I would definitely recommend LAST WILL and all of the books in the Annika Bengtzon series. I plan on going back and starting with the first in the series -- Studio Sex.
