Aiden Kimble is an adventurer. He finds what he needs in
life from extreme climbs. Six years ago he found himself in
peril at 13,000 feet on Switzerland's Bernese Alps. Just as
he felt he was about to die Aiden's only thoughts were on
his wife Maddie and how sorry he was for not treating her
the way she deserved. At that moment Aiden would have given
anything to have just one more chance with Maddie.
Six years have passed since Maddie almost lost Aiden and
these last years have been amazing. Maddie and Aiden have
never been closer but Maddie gets a vision of Aiden's death
and she begs him not to go on his next expedition. Maddie
fears she will lose Aiden if he goes and she repeatedly
begs him not to leave. They fight, they make up and he
promises he will do whatever is necessary to return to her
and his son Gabriel once again.
Gabriel is asleep and his father comes to him to tell him
goodbye. Gabriel runs to his mother and tells her about his
daddy but Maddie feels he just had a bad dream. But if it
was just a dream why is there a puddle where his "dad" had
been standing? THE MEMORY THIEF takes a more cryptic turn
when Nicholas Sullivan wakes up from a coma and doesn't
recognize the woman with him. What Nicholas does remember
is a heartbroken woman and her son.
THE MEMORY THIEF is told from each characters perspective
which can be a bit confusing and trying at times. I felt
like just when I was learning what was going on the scene
would switch to a different perspective and I would growl
with frustration. On the other hand author Emily Colin
created a story that had me guessing what was going to
happen until the end. I'm not sure how I would classify the
novel; it could be construed as paranormal or spiritual. No
matter how you categorize THE MEMORY THIEF, you will find
the story interesting and unexpected.
In Emily Colin’s exquisite debut novel, perfect for the fans of Kristin Hannah, one man’s vow to his wife sparks a remarkable journey that tests the pull of memory and reaffirms the bonds of love. Before Madeleine Kimble’s mountaineer husband, Aidan, climbs Mount McKinley’s south face, he makes her a solemn vow: I will come back to you. But late one night, Maddie gets the devastating news that Aidan has died in an avalanche, leaving her to care for their son—a small boy with a very big secret. The call comes from J.C., Aidan’s best friend and fellow climber, whose grief is seasoned with survivor’s guilt . . . and something more. J.C. has loved Maddie for years, but he never wanted his chance with her to come at so terrible a cost. Across the country, Nicholas Sullivan wakes from a motorcycle crash with his memory wiped clean. Yet his dreams are haunted by visions of a mysterious woman and a young boy, neither of whom he has ever met. Convinced that these strangers hold the answers he seeks, Nicholas leaves everything behind to find them. What he discovers will require a leap of faith that will change all of their lives forever.
