Fen is a selkie - a seal shapeshifter, a seal skin the key to his ability to shift between man and seal. In addition to shapeshifting, he can also cloak himself in magical glamour -- a very powerful illusion. Neither of these represent Fen's true power though, he is an empath, capable of sensing other people's emotions and letting them feel his own. Fen's empathic power is so exceptional that in some situations, he is even able to see the memories of certain scenes played out before him.
River Thibodaux has dedicated her life to making sure her brother Jason has the one thing she wanted but never had, a stable home life. River and Jason's lives were in constant upheaval as they were growing up due to their parents fighting, breaking-up, and making-up. Once River was old enough to leave, she moved with Jason to a small town in Maine - she started a business, bought a home, and started a new life for them. River had even opened herself up to the idea of love and a relationship; however, things ended very badly and River has wrapped herself up in a cocoon of pain, shut off from life.
Fen is drawn to River's pain and has an overwhelming need to help her resolve the issues causing the pain so she can move forward. With Fen's help, River unlocks feelings she has long left buried, bringing to light her passion not just for the man, but for life itself. Fen helps River build on her relationship with her brother, helping her to realize that though she's dedicated herself to creating a better life for the two of them; it won't matter if she doesn't actually live that life. With Fen's empathic help and love, River is able to finally open herself up to a love that has been in front of her all along - Leo.
OCEAN'S SURRENDER is a beautiful, paranormal romance with incredibly erotic sex scenes. Denise Townsend has created two incredible protagonists in River and Fen -- both are multi-faceted, complex characters that draw you in and leave you wanting more. Ms. Townsend's writing style flows very well and I completely enjoyed this book. Also available, Ocean's Touch.
