Alexis Martin's job as an FBI agent in NYC came to a
screeching halt when her newest case hits way too close to
home. When viewing the morgue photos of a Jane Doe murder
case, she discovers she is looking at pictures of her long
lost sister.
Alexis becomes so immersed with the investigation that her
boss tells her she needs some time off. But Alexis refuses
to give up the fight and travels back home to Los Angeles
with a witch named Leena who is helping her to find her
sister's killer.
Along the way Alexis crosses paths with Serge, a vampire
who has been trying to battle his daemons for centuries.
He discovers Alexis hunting rogue vampires and is intrigued
by her as he is doing the same thing despite being one of
them.
Serge has a dangerous past and Alexis has no idea what she
is getting herself into by even associating with him. When
people she knows start getting killed, Alexis realizes
solving her sister's murder won't come easy. Battling
human murderers is nothing compared to these vampires. Will
Alexis make it out alive and find justice for her sister,
or will the same killer claim another victim?
WHEN DARKNESS HUNGERS is the fifth book in the Shadow
Keepers series but can be read as a standalone story.
Although classified as paranormal romance, this story is
more paranormal thriller then romance. Extremely violent,
suspenseful, and intriguing, WHEN DARKNESS HUNGERS had me
on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen
next.
The big reveal near the end was kind of obvious from the
very beginning, so that was a little disappointing. The
romance between Alexis and Serge didn't work for me. They
don't meet for a while into the story and I just didn't
feel the chemistry between them.
The fact that Alexis is supposed to be killing vampires and
gets involved with one, especially a very dangerous one, is a bit
ironic. Her reasoning to be okay with this just didn't
mesh
well with me. I would have rather she battled the vampires
and didn't befriend them.
Overall, WHEN DARKNESS HUNGERS is entertaining and kept me
riveted from beginning to end. Less violence, more
romance, and a better connection between Serge and Alexis
would have made this more enjoyable, however WHEN DARKNESS
HUNGERS is a
great solid read.
SUMMARY
FBI agent Alexis Martin knows that vampires exist—because
one of them killed her sister. Assigned to investigate a
series of bizarre homicides in Los Angeles, Alexis believes
the murders are the work of rogue vampires—perhaps even the
monster responsible for her sister’s death. Now she finally
has a chance for retribution. Even better, Alexis receives
unexpected help from a sexy stranger as hungry for rogue
blood as she is.
Serge is a centuries-old bad boy who stays off the
grid—keeping his secrets, his hunger, and his heart safe
from exposure. A new breed of vampire that feeds off other
shadowers, Serge finds sweet torture in Alexis’s arms.
Loving her is a chance to be free from the hiding, the
loneliness, the secrecy. But the truth about what he is, and
what he’s done, may banish him to the dark confines of his
own private hell—and destroy the beginnings of their love.
