Inez Campbell has spent the first twenty-five years of her life with no emotions and believing she is an immortal Fionn with magic. One encounter with Kelvin Kerr changes all that. Not only does she discover she's actually the last human on earth, but Inez's emotions also come to life and while she fears the towering warrior, what she most feels is a lot of lust. When not feuding with the impossible Pookah, Inez is imaging all the things she would like to do to his delectable body.
Kelvin Kerr's father was murdered by a Campbell and he has vowed to exact revenge on every Campbell until there are none left. When faced with Inez, Kelvin finds himself unable to follow through on his vow. Not only is she the only living mortal left on this earth, but Kelvin has a nagging suspicion she's also his mate. Conflicted about what to do, if Kelvin isn't careful with his mortal, she may die before he decides if he can keep a Campbell forever.
THE DARKEST DAY is Britt Bury's debut novel and the spellbinding read is a great start to a promising new series. I love the whole concept of there being no more pure mortals left in the world, with only supernatural being left to populate the earth. Though some may read this book and have Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series come to mind, I think Bury has done a great job of creating her own voice and characters. While the story could use a bit more world building and a few explanations, such as what exactly a Fionn is, Bury does an excellent job with her first book and I look forward to future additions to this enticing series.
