Susan Elizabeth Phillips fans have long awaited Lucy Jorik's story since she appeared as a teen in First Lady and as a runaway bride in Call Me Irresistible. Now, finally, we get the story of what Lucy was doing after she left Ted at the alter and while he got busy falling in love with Lucy's best friend Meg. Turns out Lucy, wearing a wedding dress and a choir robe, hopped on the back of motorcycle being driven by hot guy named Panda. Thus begins her adventure into self-discovery, late-onset rebellion, and unexpected passion.
I don't want to say too much about THE GREAT ESCAPE because there is great pleasure and surprise in how Ms. Phillips unfolds this charming story of finding love in the process of uncovering your true-self. Lucy has spent her adult life striving to be the perfect presidential daughter. Apparently, marrying the prefect man was where she drew the line. Lucy is guilt ridden over disappointing Ted and her family, yet the situation forced her to realize she needs to figure out what makes her happy. The process she has to go through to figure that out is humorous and heartwarming. I must say I was a little jealous, what fun it would be to throw caution to the wind and play with the facets your personality that you rarely, if ever, give free reign.
Joining Lucy on her adventure is Patrick "Panda" Shade a man who has spent his adult life atoning for the sins of his youth. The last thing he wants is to be attracted to Lucy but he can't help himself. The efforts he made to push Lucy away at times made me laugh and shake my head knowing it was only a matter of time. There are a number of supporting characters, each with their own identity issues, who add color and feeling to the story. Once you start reading you won't be able to put it down, so give yourself plenty of time.
