HOW TO BE DEATH occurs during the Death Dinner/All Hallows Eve celebration where every magical creatures is "equalized" aka normal. Calliope, the main character, is just figuring her new job despite the "guide book" left behind for her.
When several characters are killed Calliope must veer from the course she is on, set aside her relationships and solve the murders.
I felt that Calliope's character hasn't matured much since I had last seen her. Calliope can come off as jealous, untrusting, and petty. Other characters are nice enough, but Calliope takes a little getting used too. The plot felt, similar to the first couple of books in the series.
Fans of Amber Benson do not want to miss HOW TO BE DEATH.
