What would you do if you had the chance to see a horror film
starring legendary actors Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi?
Most horror buffs would jump at the chance. The only problem
is that this film may or may not still be in existence.
Whichever is true, no one has ever seen because it was never
released to the public.
Sandy Allen is a television editor so she's quite excited
when her friend Graham discovers the sole surviving copy of
the Tower of Fear. He invites her over for a private
screening of the film, but when she arrives, the front door
is open and Graham is nowhere in sight. Finally, she sees
him on the roof of an adjoining apartment building, where he
leaps to his death, watching her the whole way down.
Apparently, Graham had been having a sneak peek at the film
just before his death.
It's this incident that sets Sandy on her own quest to find
out whatever she can about this mysterious film. Her search
leads her to various towns and cities where she tracks down
the people that were involved in the making of this movie.
There aren't many still living and those that are, don't
wish to discuss this movie.
As Sandy probes even deeper into the secrets surrounding
Tower of Fear, she discovers that there had been various
occurrences during the making of the film that were tragic
or caused paranoia. The more Sandy digs into the past, the
more she becomes aware that someone seems to be following
her. On top of that, certain odd occurrences seem to be
trailing in her wake.
Her search eventually leads her to an odd little town called
Redfield. This is the site of a long ago massacre, but the
residents living there now seem almost TOO happy and
peaceful. Spending a few days there allows Sandy to meet the
owner of the tower featured in the film. In fact, she's
welcomed to spend as long as she wants exploring the town
and the legends attached to the making of the Tower of Fear.
The only problem is that Sandy finds out enough that makes
her want to flee as fast as she can from this place, but the
residents seem unwilling to let her leave.
Not only that, but Sandy's started to feel that she's being
followed everywhere she goes, particularly at night. Those
pacing footsteps in the hall outside of her hotel room at
night couldn't possibly have anything to do with HER, could
it? Of course, those scratching noises around her door don't
mean anything, right?
Sandy just might get her wish and finally get to see this
long buried movie, but will the price be worth it?
Ramsey Campbell always constructs a great horror novel.

A lost horror film holds the key to terrifying secrets.
The legends have persisted for decades of a lost horror film
starring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi that was never
released. Rumor has it that, for reasons long forgotten,
powerful forces suppressed the film and burned all known
prints. Nobody now living has seen the finished film. But
that might no longer be true…
Film researcher Sandy Allan is invited to a screening of a
newly discovered sole-surviving print, but then the film
disappears and the real horror begins. Sandy’s search for
the film leads her to Redfield, a rural community known for
its rich soil, fertilized by blood from an ancient massacre.
But Redfield guards its secrets closely, with good reason.
During every step of her search, Sandy is watched, shadowed
by strange figures. Is it paranoia, or is someone—or
something—determined to keep the lost film and the secrets
it reveals buried forever?
