Captain Miles Trevelyan's mother was worried. So worried, in
fact, that she had even consulted with a very credible and
well known astrologer about finding a suitable wife for him,
but to no avail. Her son was the heir to the family fortune
and if he died without issue, their homes and funds would
disappear into another branch of the family. She didn't want
to be left the destitute family member dependent on others
for charity, especially after enjoying a full life in
London's society.
Despite being battle weary, Trev liked his life as an
officer in the King's Dragoons and was intent on going back
to India after his leave. Despite the strained relationship
with his mother, he understood the situation and was willing
to marry a lady he could tolerate, however, only after a wee
bit more fun in England first.
Out for many drinks with a fellow officer, he noticed a slip
of a girl dressed in a dark cloak who caught his eye.
Later, he caught her noiselessly picking his pocket. Yet,
when they crossed paths at a Masquerade Ball, she could not
deny her attraction to him.
For her part, Temperance Smith, is a bedeviling combination
of streetwise moves and youthful ingenuousness. Still
mourning the death of her lover that introduced her to the
gang life in London, she alternately hates Miles for being
in the dragoons, yet is undeniably attracted to him. When
do-gooder Lady Hartwood takes her and some other street
girls in to give then a better life, Temp is torn between
ripping her off or trusting her. But, as Lady Hartwood
explains some of the mystery of the stars, she finds out
that she is a Scorpio and has a tough choice to make in
finding her right path.
As Miles takes on a secret mission for his senior officer
and unusual events unfold, he begins to question the
previously unquestionable. Confused by Temp, who is both
straightforward and devious, he questions whether he can
trust her or not. When confronted with new information
about her life in the gang, all Temp's certainty in her
strong beliefs start to crumble, but is it too late to save
her life?
Set in 1820, Jenny Brown has created a spellbinding regency
romance with a star-studded twist in this second book in her
"Lord of the Seventh House Historical Romance Series". Both
Temp and Trev are Scorpios and the plot moves quickly along
as each dances around the other, full of emotional second
guessing, and afraid to let the other know how they want or
don't want the other; yet, are too desirous to leave.
Brown has created a wonderful pair of main characters with
unusual interests and abilities that really make them come
alive. I love it when an author pulls in interesting and
accurate historical details about the time and place which
truly makes the period come alive and so I am enamored of
Brown's talent in this area. This book can easily be read
as a stand-alone romance thriller, or better yet, fully
relished in its richness as part of a series that now has me
panting to read the rest! Can hardly wait to see what she
might say when she gets to my sign! You won't need to read
your horoscope to know this will be a
winning romance for you!
Captain Miles Trevelyan, on leave from active service in
India, is heading out for a night on the town when he
rescues a beautiful pickpocket from arrest. She's the
perfect choice for a few days of dalliance--beautiful,
cunning, and completely disposable.
But Temperance has no intention of becoming the plaything of
a man who wears the uniform of the solders who murdered her
lover. Disarming Trev with a kiss, she escapes. But her
sultry kiss opens the two Scorpio adversaries to an
obsessive attraction that neither can elude--or possibly
survive.
