The time is come for Rune Ainisethai, Wyr Sentinel, to honor
his bargain with Carling, the Vampire Queen. As second in
command to Dragos, Lord of the Wyr, Rune can only hope
Carling's request won't last a long time. He must do
whatever she asks for however long it takes even if it
takes a century or more hence Drago's anger at his
lieutenant. Carling is not known for her benevolence. She
did not become queen by being nice. For a long time she
has researched the vampire disease that is upon her and
which will kill her soon. So far no one has found a cure.
Beyond all reason Rune and Carling find themselves
attracted to one another. Not wanting anyone to see the
effects of the disease, Carling releases Rune from their
bargain and sends him on his way. He refuses to leave
after witnessing one of her episodes. Carling fades in and
out for long periods of time and Rune is afraid that she is
too vulnerable like that, especially since all of her
vampire children have abandoned her. Together they get
down to the serious business of finding a way to reverse
the effects of the disease. What they soon learn is that
someone doesn't want Carling to survive the disease and it
becomes a race to keep her safe and alive at the same
time.
SERPENT'S KISS is an epic love story filled with tension and
angst.
These two unlikely protagonists who mix like oil and water
make for a terrific book as the author weaves the past and
present to create some unforgettable scenes. Although I
liked this addition to the series I missed the action and
presence of the Wyr race.
Recently, Vampire Queen Carling's power has become erratic, forcing her followers to flee. Wyr sentinel Rune is drawn to the ailing Queen and decides to help find a cure for the serpent's kiss-the vampyric disease that's killing her.
