Two people survived the accident that killed the First Lady -- Attorney Jessica Ford and Secret Service Agent Mark Ryan. Shortly thereafter Jessica is hired by one of the top law firms in D. C. to replace an attorney that recently got married and never returned to work. She is put on a rape case defending a senator's son and is as surprised as everyone when the jury finds him not guilty. Jessica feels that one of the jurors might have been threatened, and tries to contact her. She is unable to reach the woman, and then Jessica hears from the woman's mother that her daughter is missing. Jessica tries to locate the missing attorney she has replaced, and comes to a dead- end. Evidently her nosing around in missing persons has someone worried, and that someone wants her dead.
Mark Ryan was the special agent in charge of the First Lady's security detail the night of the car crash that killed her, her driver, and a Secret Service agent who had accompanied her that evening. Jess was alive only because she was thrown from the car, and when Mark found her lying on a hillside, he knew she was kept safe just for him. Their courtship went from zero to one-hundred in days, and the next thing you know Mark proposed. He didn't think he meant to, as he went through a bad marriage and worse divorce, but he did and Jess accepted. Mark managed to screw up his engagement, which he thought he'd wanted to do, but Jess was hurt so badly she will have nothing to do with him. Jess's law firm contacts the FBI about the attempts on her life, and Mark is assigned to be her protector against her wishes.
JUSTICE is Karen Robards at her very best, which is simply outstanding. Terrific characters, clever and witty repartee, titillating romance, and white knuckle danger combine to make this book another readerlicious treat for fans of romantic suspense.
