Private Detective Marissa Holloway has earned her job and
her reputation by nothing but hard work. As a Fury, an
arcane race that has always delivered justice, Marissa has
never had anything handed to her on a silver platter. Her
life's work has led to her latest position as Boston's
Chief Magical Investigator. Now an official part of the
taskforce, Marissa knows that one error could be the end of
all she has worked for. Bodies begin turning up in alleys,
all are male and all are Bastai, or Cats. Cats are supposed
to have ninety-nine lives, but someone has been cutting
them short, really short. Suddenly Marissa realizes that
this case seems to be hitting a little too close to home.
When FBI Agent Harper Cruz's exes start turning up dead,
Marissa knows that she has to solve this case before the
killer strikes again. Marissa is dating one of Harper's
exes, Scott, and every clue indicates that one by one
Harper's exes are getting murdered. The old saying about
cats not mixing with dogs has been taken to a whole new
level. Taking on an undercover identity as a wedding
planner, Marissa knows that she is the only one who may be
close enough to catch the cat-killer by the tail. Can she
stop the killer before Scott gets nipped?
First, some criticism, the story was pretty hard for me to
follow in the beginning. Not having read the first book I
was a little confused with all the arcane species and the
background information that I had obviously missed about
the characters. I thought that the story was almost like
jumping into the deep end without learning how to swim, but
eventually all the little details were spelled out for me
and I caught on. I would recommend reading the series as a
whole, not as an individual book.
Now onto the good things,
I really liked the plot. I never guessed the killer until
Marissa did and even then I seriously doubted that she was
right. I loved how Ms. Mackenzie led us to several wrong
steps before finally coming to the right one. The
characters and all the players involved with the murders
were complex and intriguing. I really liked how the book
was written from the detective's view point. I learned more
about the suspects than I think I did about the main
characters, but I felt that this view only added to the
story. Overall, a good read, wonderful mystery, and enough
intrigue to keep me on my toes wondering exactly who done
Jealousy can be a killer...
As a Fury, Marissa Holloway belongs to an Arcane race that
has meted out justice since time immemorial. As Boston's
chief magical investigator, it's her duty to solve any
crimes committed by or against supernaturals.
Months have gone by since Riss discovered some unwelcome
truths about her past--and managed to stop a supernatural
war. Since then things have been quiet. Too quiet. But that
all changes when the bodies of Bastai, shapeshifters also
known as Cats, begin piling up in Boston's magical
underbelly--even though the legendary shifters are supposed
to have ninety-nine lives.
One common thread ties the victims together: all were old
flames of FBI Agent Harper Cruz. And since Harper and Riss's
lover Scott Murphy enjoyed a one-night stand before he and
Riss reunited, the Fury has twice the incentive to crack the
case wide open, before the killer's green-eyed gaze turns in
Scott's direction...
