Lady Serena Grantley was born to the nobility but her stepfather's gambling has led to her acting as a faro's daughter. She is forced to grace the gambling dens he runs to draw in fatuous young men so that he can then entice them to gamble. Serena was in love with Sebastian Sullivan, but her stepfather forced her to reject him.
Three years later, they return to London where she runs into Sebastian almost immediately. Sebastian's older brother has married but to inherit the money from their great uncle, they must all marry fallen women. Sebastian realizes that he has never forgotten Serena and he proposes to her.
Serena has reasons for staying with her stepfather but once she ruins his plans, she plans to leave. Her love for Sebastian is as strong as ever but she refuses to be part of something that will bring him down.
Both their plans will be set awry by the actions of her stepfather. But the love between them will grow and both of them will take steps to thwart his plans.
The second in the series featuring the Blackwater brothers, Ms. Feather has written an intriguing book with unexpected twists and turns. As an avid fan of Ms. Feather's writing, it was nice to have my high expectations met.
