Toni Matthews has finally found the man of her dreams, and
in three days, they're tying the knot. She's one of the
most successful real estate agents in Nashville, and her
fiancee Scott Chadwick, an architect, owns a successful
company. As the wedding countdown begins, she realizes she
needs to head to his construction site as she left her
briefcase in his car, which she needs for a house closing.
But as she arrives, she finds that Scott has died, and the
rampant speculation is that he committed suicide by jumping
off the top of the hotel.
On the day that should have been her wedding, Toni finds
herself burying Scott. While her friends have accepted the
medical examiner's findings that the death was a suicide,
Toni cannot believe that Scott would kill himself only days
before they were to get married, especially when she finds
out only days later that his estranged brother Brian is
contesting Scott's will. Since Scott named his wife as his
heir, Brian is trying to claim the entirety of the
inheritance, which is quite sizable and includes her current
home.
The police don't listen to her when she goes there to insist
they re-open the case, and her friends believe she's in
denial. After all, who would want to believe that their
fiancee would rather kill himself than spend the rest of his
life with her? And as she digs further into the details of
his life, she discovers one startling revelation after
another. How well did she actually know the man she was
about to marry? And who is it that seems so determined to
keep her from finding the truth? Will she pay with her own
life for trying to find out how Scott's ended?
This compelling book moved at a great pace. Once Toni's
investigation started, I found the book difficult to put
down. Toni was a dogged, determined, intelligent amateur
investigator with little more than her wits, intuition, and
belief in her relationship with Scott to go on. There were
several twists in this book that took me by surprise, each
time just as I thought I had everything figured out. Toni
was a well-written character, and readers will have no
choice but to root for her.
AT TWENTY-NINE, TONI MATTHEWS IS ON THE CUSP OF HAVING IT
ALL—a successful career as one of the top real estate
agents
in Nashville, great friends, and the partner and family
she'd always longed for in her fiance, architect Scott
Chadwick.
But just days before their planned nuptials, Scott plummets
to his death at one of his construction sites and Toni is
forced to bury her fiance on their wedding day. Now living
all alone in their new, custom-made dream house, dealing
with her loss becomes even harder when the police rule his
death a suicide. Yet Toni refuses to believe that it could
be anything other than a tragic accident.
When she learns that Scott's estranged brother, Brian, is
contesting the will, threatening to take away her home, Toni
starts to suspect that it may not have been a mere accident
but something more sinister. Without the cooperation of the
police, and in spite of her friends' growing concern that
she's in denial and not dealing with her grief, Toni begins
investigating on her own. As she crisscrosses Nashville on a
mission to prove to herself and the world that Scott
wouldn't try to escape this life, Toni can't shake the
sinking feeling that something is off, that she's being
followed—and that her search for truth may have deadly
consequences.
A riveting novel of suspense, Deed to Death marks the launch
of an exciting new talent.
