Trace Huntsman did not want to be the landlord for anyone, much less Kenzie and Matt's victimized and displaced sister, Fiona. Time travellers have to get used to being a part of society, but after her abuse and subsequent ages as a hawk, Fiona needs socialization. However, she fears and hates men, and Trace doesn't want to scare her or have to deal with her. He keeps telling himself that when he starts to feel protective of Fiona in the face of would-be Lotharios, both local and unknowing as well as powerful and ageless. Her obsession with cleaning his pigsty of a house, the animals she attracts, and her need to pile items in surprising---and often dangerous---arrangements are annoying, as well as endearing, habits. Meanwhile, Fiona wants to gain control of her actions, her future, and her reality as a human woman. As part of the control she needs, she wants, a child.
Janet Chapman has again created an intricate conflict for the displaced time travellers and their loved ones. The straightforward nature of the prose, the humorous encounters between Trace and Fiona, and the subcurrents of necessary factors in any relationship, whether romantic or parental, make MYSTICAL WARRIOR a must- read.
