Romance Historical

Sir Paul Hilliard left the Bladesmen when he discovered their methods were less than honorable, despite their laudable goals. Now he is back, and they are asking for one more service; one that could get him executed for treason.

Juliana was taken in by the Bladesmen when she became an orphan, and trained as one of their best agents. They have taught her everything she needs to know, including the subtleties and nuances of using her feminine wiles and lovely body to accomplish their goals.

Paul's mission is just the sort Juliana has been training for. Her duty is to guard him in the role of concubine while he is dangled in front of the traitors who would use him as a false heir to the throne. She ignores any warmer feelings toward him sparked by childhood memories as he has done the one thing she can never forgive, abandon his duty to pursue a life with little purpose.

As Paul's feelings toward Juliana grow he finds it more and more difficult to live the role that thrusts them so closely together, especially with her obvious disdain for the choices he has made. Yet to defend himself would cost her dearly, ruining the belief she has in the Bladesmen and leaving her nowhere else to go, so he bides his time and bites his tongue.

Julia Latham has written another solid medieval romance with an interesting twist. I loved that Juliana had such a strong and vital role as bodyguard and also Latham's use of the politics of the period to form the backbone of the larger plot. SIN AND SURRENDER is the third book in the Raised to be Bladesmen series and, as we have come to expect, it is tightly plotted with fully realized characters and written with humor and passion.
