Fantasy Urban

After her rescue from the serial killer called the Gardener in book one of the series, Dark Oracle, Tara Sheridan has left her job as an agent for the Special Projects Division of the Department of Justice and is freelancing on a case-by-case basis profiling criminals for law enforcement. Tara doesn't just use her psychological education for profiling criminals she also uses her tarot cards and her inherited skills as a quasi-member of Delphi's Daughters, an ancient sect of women descended from the ancient Greek prognosticators who work behind the scenes to guide world events. Agent Harry Li is still working for Special Projects and has been out of touch, until he approaches Tara with a mission badly in need of her special skills. Retired secret agents who worked together on a project detailed with finding and securing sources of uranium and any nuclear ordnance or power sources are disappearing. All their clothes and possessions are left behind, and there are no forensic clues with the exception of muddled DNA samples which just make no sense. At the same time, the hidden nuclear supplies are appearing on the black market, sold to terrorist organizations and others intent on creating chaos. ROGUE ORACLE is a tightly plotted thriller with hints of romance and the paranormal. It gives a fascinating glimpse into the workings of post 9/11 security forces, and a horrifying look into the history of the disaster at Chernobyl and its repercussions. Williams writes scenes containing gory, explicit violence but they are not out of place with the story line, in fact any softening or blurring of the edges would not ring true with the underlying story. The Delphic Oracle series may have its roots in the ancient past, but the dangers Tara encounters are very much part of current events, making the sense of danger immediate and terrifying. Although there are definitely paranormal elements in the books, the plot hangs on speculative science and cold, hard fact making this a book that will be enjoyed by readers of either paranormal or standard fiction.

SUMMARY

THE MORE YOU KNOW ABOUT THE FUTURE, THE MORE THERE MAY BE TO FEAR.

Tara Sheridan is the best criminal profiler around—and the most unconventional. Trained as a forensic psychologist, Tara also specializes in Tarot card reading. But she doesn’t need her divination skills to realize that the new assignment from her friend and sometime lover, Agent Harry Li, is a dangerous proposition in every way.

Former Cold War operatives, all linked to a top-secret operation tracking the disposal of nuclear weapons in Russia, are disappearing. There are no bodies, and no clues to their whereabouts. Harry suspects a conspiracy to sell arms to the highest bidder. The cards—and Tara’s increasingly ominous dreams—suggest something darker. Even as Tara sorts through her feelings for Harry and her fractured relationship with the mysterious order known as Delphi’s Daughters, a killer is growing more ruthless by the day. And a nightmare that began decades ago in Chernobyl will reach a terrifying endgame that not even Tara could have foreseen. . . .
