NIGHT OF THE VAMPIRES was not what I expected... it was enticingly more! In this book set during the Civil War, author Heather Graham provides a fresh twist that I had never read anywhere before. The war was gruesome, it was horrendous for thousands of Americans all across the country; throw in a vampire infestation and it becomes deadly on a whole new level.
Cole Granger, Sheriff of Victory, Texas, was brought into the war to fight, not for the North or the South, but to fight a whole new evil. This evil does not choose sides. This is an evil that preys upon the North and the South, both the living and the dead. Cole had swept his town of the vampire infestation and now joined forces with Cody Fox and Brendan Vincent to clear the capitol of the same deadly sickness. Suddenly there is a stranger in their midst and the attacks seem centered wherever she goes. Cole finds himself doubting whether to trust her, love her, or leave her for the shadows in the night. When troubles brew in Harper's Ferry, Cole finds that this stranger may be the only home he needs to know and he will die to protect her.
Alone in the world, Megan Fox is searching for her family. A family like no other, for Megan's father is a vampire. When Megan learns that her half-brother is headed to Washington, DC to fight the undead, she can do nothing but join him and his group of friends in their quest. Once there, Megan finds Cole just may be the biggest obstacle she has to overcome. Filled with doubts about herself and her family, Megan goes with Cole to fight and cure those who have been bitten. Megan begins to think that the master of the vampires may be passing herself off as one of the living. In fact, Megan believes that this shadow just may belong to their group. Will she be able to ferret out the evil or will more lives be lost in the fight?
The settings of the story, characters, and fight were so vivid that the story stuck with me from page to page, day to day until I found that I wasn't able to put it down! Once again, Heather Graham has hit a home run with this dynamic novel.
