During the battle to prevent the corruption of magic, Zayvion Jones stepped through the gate into death. As a guardian of the gates, he has the ability to leave but something is preventing him from returning. Allie walks into death with Stone by her side to find him. While there, she meets a version of her father who leads her to Zayvion. The only way she can take Zay back to life is to give up the magic that resides within her. Reluctantly, Allie agrees. When they return to Portland, there are other problems to face.

Part of Allie's father still resides within her and takes control at the worst possible times. The Veiled now have the disks that were stolen during the battle and are attempting to take back their magic. Gates are opening all over the city, using up valuable strength that will be needed as the battle progresses. Pike's ghost is returning to Allie to warn her of an impending invasion by the ghosts of those who had their magic stolen from them. Detective Stotts is investigating all the mysterious happenings, and Allie will need to protect him.

Fans of Ms. Monk will be thrilled with the latest in the series featuring Allie Beckstrom. Allie and Zay are a great couple who complement each other in so many ways. The story is engrossing and fast-paced. The taste of the most recent book in the series only whets the appetite for the next one.
