Liz Phoenix is still reeling from the death of mentor and lover Sawyer and her part in it. After Sawyer visits her in a dream, she is left with the responsibility for a baby with more secrets than just her parentage. It's a good thing her sidekick, Luther, knows more about babies than Liz, or they'd be in more trouble than they're used to encountering.
Guided by Ruthie, fleeing those who want the baby dead, Liz and Luther must find her ex-lover Jimmy Sanducci. Liz and Jimmy have a history making it difficult for them to work together, or completely trust one another, but they must have the Book of Samyaza and they cannot defeat that which guards it on their own. And Liz as another reason for wanting the book. In it is the secret for raising the dead, and she knows she needs Sawyer back among the living if they're going to defeat the continuing threat of the Nephilim.
CHAOS BITES by Lori Handeland is the fourth in the Phoenix Chronicles. Ms. Handeland has created an intriguing storyline with the impending apocalypse, and continues to throw in a variety of unexpected, humorous and frightening twists to keep things fresh. CHAOS BITES has all of these elements, and then some, guaranteeing it's a tough to put down page-turner. That said, I have to admit the gloom and doom, the choices Liz must make and the things she must endure can be a real downer. While I really liked this book, and enjoy the entire premise of the series, I was feeling pretty negative by the end of the story. Yes, these are dark days, but even darkness needs some light on occasion!
