Anna Strong has spent the last year of her death adjusting to, and coming to terms with, her vampirism. She has learned to intermix a "human" life while hiding the fact that she is a vampire from her family and business partner, David. But now that the eve of her "becoming" is upon her, suddenly she is faced with strong vampire urges, powers she doesn't understand, and nagging rumors that she will become the Chosen One on her one year anniversary.
When Anna is attacked in her own garage, her vampire boyfriend, Lance, talks her into getting away to his home in Palm Springs. There, Anna learns of Lance's origins and meets his sire, Julian Underwood. The vile aura that she senses from Julian is a warning that she must get away but, before she can leave Palm Springs, she is viciously attacked again. This time, they also threaten Lance's life. Anna's fear that an old enemy, Warren Williams, is trying to force prophesy on her leads her to learn all she can about what she does not want to become. But when Warren goes missing, Anna discovers that the real threat is closer to home, and dangerous to her both physically and emotionally. Anna finds she must face what she has been denying all this time and, for the first time, do it alone.
CHOSEN is the sixth book in the Anna Strong Chronicles by Jeanne Stein. With each book in the series, not only has Stein's characters become stronger but so has her writing. Anna is being immersed deeper into the vampire world in this installment and she is facing internal struggles between what she was (human) and what she is now. The sex is on the erotica side, so don't look for touching love scenes or sensuous foreplay. These are vampires, and Stein shows this through the animal like spontaneity of the sexual act. This is not a paranormal romance, though some may try to classify it as such. It is a hard hitting urban fantasy with a hard hitting female lead.
