How many of us, if we were to be truly honest with
ourselves, would say that our lives are exciting, and
something different happens almost daily? Not many. In the
long run, though, aren't we somewhat happy with the fact that
we know our routines, our friends, and our families? We
know that each day is going to be, if not an exact duplicate
of the day before, a very close approximation. However,
what if a stranger came into our lives and shook things up?
How would we react?
That is the premise of KNIT IN COMFORT. Comfort, North
Carolina is the small town where Megan lives with her
family. Life is sometimes a struggle for Megan as she
attempts to stretch her husband's salary to feed not only
themselves and their children, but also her Mother-in-law
who lives with them. To make a bit of extra money, Megan
decides to rent out the garage apartment. What she
doesn't realize when she leases to Elizabeth is the impact
that Elizabeth will have not only on Megan herself, but on
the women of the knitting group that Megan belongs to and
believes to be her closest friends.
As established in her life as Megan is, Elizabeth is just
the opposite. She is unsettled. Even though she is full of
ideas, she has yet to settle on a single career choice, and
refuses to marry to her boyfriend Dominique. She decides
that her grandmother is sending her a sign that Comfort is
where she needs to be to settle on the path for her life,
and she embraces that idea wholeheartedly. Still, she is
unsure what she is looking for as she worms her way into the
lives of Megan, and her family and friends.
As Elizabeth gets more involved in Comfort, things change.
The members of Megan's inner circle gain a confidence they
never knew they had, and as a result changes may be
forthcoming.
KNIT IN COMFORT is not quite the book I was expecting it to
be. While it does revolve around a group of women, I didn't
feel it adequately captured what it means to have the
support of close friends. I also thought that this book
would be a somewhat fast easy read, but it's not. It's the
type of book that needs to be read thoughtfully. I believe
that KNIT IN COMFORT would be a great choice for discussion
in a book club.
Megan has always longed for the comforts of home. But if
her dreams of the perfect life with her husband and
children in Comfort, North Carolina, have sometimes come up
short, she finds solace every time she-along with other
women of the town-takes up knitting needles. From her
hands come beautiful creations, made out of the emotions
she feels in her heart, and Megan feels like she really
belongs. But the change comes to close-knit Comfort when
Megan takes on a new tenant, Elizabeth. She's brash, she's
bold and she's about to unravel everything.
