Mystery | Horror

A hard working man for most of his life, 84 year-old and wheelchair-bound Morris Grover can only snipe back at life with his sharp tongue and by not taking his meds. His beloved wife, Gertie, had recently passed on and he was stuck living with his sports fixated son, Stan, and his wife Jude. While they had tried halfheartedly to support Morris in their home, his constant complaints and demands interfered too much with Stan's sports watching and they made the decision to send Morris off to a nursing home (without consulting him, of course).

While Morris is annoyed at the decision, deep down he knows he needs the care, so he accepts staying at Rigg's Nursing home. Morris hates the pervasive smells and the limited food selections, but most of all he is appalled by the abuse and violence with which some staff members treat the home's residents.

But all is not dark in his new home away from home. The highlight of his day soon becomes the growing support and teasing camaraderie he grudgingly enjoys from a group of other male residents. After hearing their views about a series of patient deaths, Morris is upset and wants to lodge a complaint with his family. Despite family promises to see him often, the visits soon dwindle. When they do visit, they dismiss all of Morris' concerns. Things change when it's staff members who turn up dead. Though the cops are called and a suspect is identified, the question remains--- can the killer be found in time?

Written in a deceptively simple and breezy style, James J. Murphy pulls the reader into the sights and smells of the Riggs Nursing Home, as well as the interactions between the staff and the residents. You see events through the eyes of Morris, the new resident, and four misfit youths who couldn't find the jobs they wanted. You will be shocked at the realistic horror ranging from the seemingly ordinary to the unimaginable. With its snappy dialogue and strong storyline, fans of horror and the paranormal are sure to enjoy this suspenseful tale. It will definitely make you want to very carefully check references before leaving your loved ones in a nursing home!
