Suspense | Fantasy Urban

Gabriel Redfeather finds himself the bearer of the Nimrod, a powerful weapon that contains the soul of the Bishop. The more Gabriel uses the magic of the trident, the louder the Bishop whispers in the young man's mind.

On the run after the destruction of Sanctuary, Gabriel and the remaining warriors find shelter with the mage Jonas. Lucy and Grandfather Redfeather are held prisoner by the goblin king Orden in the depths of the Iron Mountain, and Titus evolves his plan to capture the Nimrod and rule over whatever he decides should be left of the world.

This is the second book of the Dark Storm series. Having not read the first book Dark Storm, I was very confused by the large cast of characters. While each character eventually demonstrated a uniqueness (Rogue's shadow mastery was interesting), overall they left me flat. The plot of a great evil seeking a powerful weapon from the innocent who happens to have it is a standard trope. There is mention of a "Spark", but not much detail is given; I assume those who read the first book know what it is, and hopefully it will be explained in more in coming books. However, it plays a very small role in this installment.

Overall, this book didn't work for me but readers who started the series at the beginning or who like large casts of characters and traditional tropes, may find it more to their liking.

SUMMARY

Soul-sucking demons. Half-human killers. Doomsday prophesies. No, this isn’t a late-night movie on cable TV. This is Gabriel’s life—at least, what’s left of it—ever since he discovered his true destiny as a warrior knight in the battle against darkness. Once an ordinary college kid studying lost legends in books, Gabriel now finds himself face to face with actual demons. As a warrior, he has no choice but to fight them and if he screws it up, the world is toast.

A dimensional rift has opened between worlds, which means more demons and more death than you could shake a proverbial stick at. Luckily, Gabriel has just the stick for the job, an ancient trident that gives him awesome demon-bashing powers. He also has the half-Demon De Mona to watch his back. Together, Gabriel and De Mona pick up several unlikely heroes along the way.

Despite having assembled a trustworthy army, matters become increasing more complicated for Gabriel when two of his college buddies wind up dead. He soon finds that the demons aren’t the only ones who want a piece of his hide. Now the cops want him too—for murder.

Say goodbye to the human race and hello to hell on Earth. This fast paced tome will stay with you long after the last page has been turned.
