Mr. William Darcy seems to be a social klutz. After an unsuccessful attempt at a marriage proposal to Miss Elizabeth Bennet several months prior, he is found suffering the doldrums as this novel opens. His sister and entire household of servants are very concerned about him. They confide in a visiting cousin who speaks directly to William and finds out he is berating himself for his blunder of a proposal and learns how much he really wants to make things work with Miss Bennet. His cousin encourages him to go back and see her again and begin the courtship all over.
Mr. Darcy does just that. He accompanies a good friend to Netherfield, who just happens to also be pursuing Elizabeth's sister. This proves to be the perfect springboard for seeing Elizabeth again. William is not met with hostility, yet finds her neither encouraging nor discouraging. Throughout their new courtship, they discuss their misunderstandings, their misinterpretations of each other's intentions, and each one apologizes for jumping to conclusions. He agrees to go slowly, but she is determined to hold the cards on whether things move along at all.
