Fantasy Urban

Corine Solomon has returned to Kilmer, Georgia to find out who killed her mother and why. Kilmer is a mystery since it exists on no maps and those who search on another level are unable to see through the fog that surrounds the town.

Corine lived a happy life with her mother until one night some men came to their house. Corine's mother sends her into the woods and Corine sees the house burned to the ground. Every family who takes her in finds a reason to send her on to another until finally Corine leaves Kilmer behind. As Corine's powers grow, she feels the loss of mother even more since there is no one to guide her in learning to use her powers.

With Corine, comes her former boyfriend, Chance. Chance has the most remarkable luck but there is always payback for his skill. The women around Chance die very quickly after a phenomenal find. Since Corine, intends to be around a long time she has broken up with Chance. His love for her has brought them to the point that he will do anything, including search for the mysteries of Kilmer.

On their arrival, they discover two things. Cell service is non-existent and Chance's abilities are not working; except in the library. The two of them find that there are mysterious disappearances all over town that no one seems to be investigating. When Corine and Chance seemingly disappear, her mentor, Jesse, comes after them.

With Jesse's help and the help of a young woman from Kilmer, they will discover the horrific secrets that Kilmer hides. Corine will learn what happened the night her mother died and find herself near death. Only with the intervention of the creature responsible for the death of so many talented children in Kilmer, will she survive to return to life in Mexico.

A big fan of Ms. Aguirre's Sirantha Jax series, this was my first opportunity to read her newer series surrounding Corine Solomon. This was a fascinating look into an alternate world in small town Georgia.

As with her other series, there is a certain darkness surrounding the central character but the reader will find there is a certain fascination in reading about someone who has managed to rise above the horrors of their lives. This book is a reminder that no one can live without friends and those relationships will always shape our future.
