The Triple Bind

THE TRIPLE BIND is an in-depth look at the pressures and messages the teen girls of this current generation are facing and the possible negative long term effects. The books combines testimony straight from the girls' mouths, scientific research and many different media sources to show the contradictory messages and expectations this new female teen generation faces.

THE TRIPLE BIND looks at the expectations of teen girls to be the perfect girl, stay competitive with the boys, yet still be 100% perfect all the time. This generation of girls is lacking some of the role models past generations have had to combat the mixed signals woman have received for years. Hinshaw and Kranz believe this Bind is putting these girls at risk for eating disorders, depression, aggression, and even suicide.

Dr. Hinshaw and Kranz take an extensive look into the multitude of issues facing the current generation of teen girls in regards to what TV tells them to be, what parents and educators expect them to be and most of all conflict that erupts when the teen has a different take on what her life should be.

I think this book would be great for parents and educators to gain a better understanding of the messages we give our teens and how to help relieve their stress, filter the overwhelming messages, and to give more clear expectations for our girls. Although the chapters are dense and reminded me of the psychology research studies I had to read in college, the use of pop culture references and precise examples of the mixed messages our girls receive is clearly illustrated throughout the book. THE TRIPLE BIND would be invaluable to someone studying the psychology of teenage girls of this generation and for anyone looking for more insight into the female adolescent mind.

SUMMARY

The Triple Bind that girls face today:

• Act sweet and nice
• Be a star athlete and get straight A's
• Seem sexy and hot even if you're not

In many ways, today is the best time in history to be a girl: Opportunities for a girl's success are as unlimited as her dreams. Yet societal expectations, cultural trends, and conflicting messages are creating what psychologist and researcher Stephen Hinshaw calls "the Triple Bind." Girls are now expected to excel at "girl skills," achieve "boy goals," and be models of female perfection, 100 percent of the time. Here, Dr. Hinshaw reveals key aspects of the Triple Bind, including

• genes, hormones, and the role of biology in confronting the Triple Bind
• overscheduled lives and how the high pressure to excel at everything sets girls up for crisis
• how traditionally feminine qualities (such as empathy and self-awareness) can put girls at risk for anxiety, depression, and other disorders
• the oversexualization of little girls, preteens, and teenagers
• the reasons girls are channeling pressure into violence

Combining moving personal stories with extensive research, Dr. Hinshaw provides tools for parents who want to empower their daughters to deal in healthy ways with today's pressures.
