Suspense

Anne Marshall is a court reporter attending law school at night. Although Professor Elliott Spence is not one of her favorite teachers, Anne and the members of her study group are stunned to find out he has been killed in a hit and run. They are even more shocked when it appears to have been a deliberate murder. Suspicion immediately falls on Kathy Spence, Elliott's wife, since witnesses saw a blonde woman driving, and the car involved is Kathy's car. It seems like an open-and-shut case since Kathy was alone that night, drinking, and thus has no alibi for the time of the killing. However, one of Kathy's dear friends is convinced she is innocent, and Anne's father agrees, claiming Kathy is being framed. Anne's own natural curiosity leads her into an investigation, to the dismay of her two police officer friends and the delight of her study group.

But Anne also has an edge that no one else knows: Her father is a ghost, who began appearing to her about six months ago. He can find out things without being seen, and as a lawyer in his mortal life, he helps Anne know the right questions to ask -- besides guiding her with a bit of fatherly wisdom. The only person who can see him, Anne is grateful to again have contact with her beloved dad, even if his comings and goings are still a bit jarring.

This is a pretty basic mystery with routine genre conventions, characters most readers have seen many times before, with a few situations and some dialog that are a bit soap opera-ish. (No offense to soap lovers.) Anne's father provides a twist, but it's really not enough to separate this book from the dozens of other amateur-sleuth mysteries that are out there.

SUMMARY

Kathy Spence awakens in the middle of the night and finds herself in a living nightmare. Her husband has been run down and she is the primary suspect. With an eyewitness to the crime and proof that her car was the murder weapon, it appears to be an open-and-shut case.

Terrified for her future, Kathy turns to amateur sleuth Anne Marshall for help. Believing in Kathy's innocence, Anne launches her own investigation, uncovering proof of a conspiracy that reaches from Kathy's past and threatens her own life.

In a race against time, Anne must count on her close friends and even the ghost of her father to help her bring a killer to justice before it's too late.
