Romance Historical
The village of Reston hasn't changed in years. When the
Marquess of Vessey and his sister, Lady Jane Cummings, take
their father to the Lake District, very little has
changed.
They haven't even settled in before everyone comes to
call. Jane and Jason's father, the Duke of Rayne has become more
confused since the death of his wife. Their hope is that
being in a location that meant so much to all of them, he
will recover. Jason is having trouble dealing with the facts of his
father's illness and the need for him to take over his
father's responsibilities. Jane learns that Bryne Worth is residing in the district.
She met him once in London. Her best friend is married to
his brother. She takes him a basket of bread and jam and
finds a man who is dealing badly with a disabling injury. Bryne and his brother served the Crown during the war with
Napoleon. He was shot in the thigh. While he is able to
walk with a cane, Bryne will never be able to do the things
he used to. His irascible behavior has alienated everyone
in the village. Since his arrival in the village, a
highwayman has been wreaking havoc in the area. The
village
is convinced he is the villain. The only thing preventing
his arrest is a lack of evidence. Bryne's nature is such
that he doesn't interact easily with stranger. His demons
have caused him to retreat from society; thus feeding their
concerns about him. Lady Jane convinces him that the only way to prove his
innocence is to find the real highwayman. As they work
together, Bryne becomes her haven from the demands of her
family. As their relationship develops, Jane will do all
she can to protect Bryne from the villagers. Bryne will
make an effort to overcome the villagers' bad opinions of
him. When the truth of their relationship is exposed, matters
will come to a head. Jason makes an attempt to protect his
sister by sending her away. Little does he realize that
his
decision will place Jane in danger that will force Bryne to
make the decision that he can't do without Jane in his
life. This was a marvellous read. Jane and Jason are dealing
with
different issues as they watch their beloved father descend
into a world where he no longer recognizes them. Bryne is
battling his demons and learning that he does deserve a
wonderful woman in his life. Ms. Noble has written a very
moving story peopled with very human characters. The
glimpse of village life is an amusing look at the dynamics
of a small village and how they cope with change.
SUMMARY
From the acclaimed author of Revealed comes a
tale of first loves and second chances.
Lady
Jane Cummings is certain that her summer is ruined when she
is forced to reside at isolated Merrymere Lake with her
reckless brother and ailing father. Her fast-paced London
society is replaced with a small town grapevine. But one bit
of gossip catches Jane's attention- rumors that the lake's
brooding new resident is also an elusive highwayman.
Jane must face the much discussed mysterioso after
he saves her brother from a pub brawl. She immediately
recognizes him from London: Byrne Worth, war hero and
apparent hermit-whom she finds strangely charming. The two
build a fast friendship, and soon nothing can keep this Lady
away from Merrymere's most wanted. Convinced of his
innocence, Jane is determined to clear Byrne's name-and
maybe have a little fun this summer after all.
