Deserted by her mother and never knowing her father, Magdalena Varcek was raised by her grandmother, "Baba," who told her to always look for the signs the universe would give to make decisions in her life. After Baba dies, the signs lead teenaged runaway Maggie to Ramon Jimenez. Too late, she realizes that Ramon belongs to a notorious criminal family, and she will probably be killed if she tries to leave. In addition, she has fallen in love with one of the Jimenez crew, Michael Scott, and is pregnant with his child. Only 18, Maggie still has hopes she will find her happily ever after with Michael. She plans to tell him about the baby before an important "shipment," but ends up watching in horror as the FBI raids the site. She also discovers that Michael is actually an FBI agent and has betrayed her. Only minutes later, he is brought from the building, a casualty of the gunfire.
Maggie flees again, and 14 years later she has settled down. After marrying a kind man but then losing him to illness, she is content with her life as the single mother of teenager Quinn, her worst problems being some debts from her bar business and trying to find time to date. So when a handsome stranger walks into the bar and shows a definite interest in Maggie, she flirts with him and they end up making out. She never suspects that Dan Gallagher, a member of the elite Bullet Catcher security organization, is the same Michael Scott she has thought dead for all these years.
After finding out that Ramon Jimenez has been released from prison, Dan tells himself he just wants to make sure Maggie's okay. A confirmed bachelor, he doesn't expect the physical and emotional reaction he has on seeing her again -- and then the punch in the gut from seeing her son, who looks almost exactly like a teenaged Dan did. But because of his disguise all those years ago, Maggie doesn't make the connection. It's up to Dan to tell her the truth.
Meanwhile, the Jimenez family is looking for revenge and a hidden fortune, and many of them believe Maggie is not only the person who betrayed Ramon, but she also knows where the money is. Dan and Maggie must put their personal lives on hold when both she and Quinn are threatened, and Dan finds himself with a new assignment in which the stakes have never been higher.
The Bullet Catcher books take readers on a roller coaster ride of thrills, danger and suspense, made even more pulse- pounding by the steamy love scenes! The action will grab you from the first page and not let go until the end, but more than that, there's a complex relationship between Dan and Maggie that gives the book heart and soul, as well. But those personal issues never slow the pace -- if anything, they ramp up the tension even further. One thing I appreciate about the Bullet Catcher series is that they're great standalone reads -- but like potato chips and chocolates, I think once you try one, you'll crave more!
