Marcus Helios who also goes by Lord Alexander is not your
typical gentleman of the Ton. Not only is he the son of
Cleopatra and Marcus Antonius, but he is what is know as a
Shadow Guard, an immortal who seeks to protect their inner
realm from "transcended" souls. These souls have turned evil
and one such soul he fought against was Jack the Ripper.
Marcus is slowly going mad after saving another Shadow
Guard. He hears voices inside his head and he is afraid that
he will succumb to the darkness that awaits him. But he may
have hope in the form of Mina Limpett whose father may hold
the key to his salvation.
Mina's father is believed to be dead after he never returned
from an exhibition to Tibet. Professor Limpett was accused
of borrowing museum artifacts from the British Museum and he
resigned from his post as the language scholar there. Mina
felt her father was going mad after he told her this
outlandish tale of a secret society of men who have
discovered the secrets of immortality for their own evil
purposes. His goal was to find the ancient Akkadian scrolls
that these immortals would kill to own. Mina accompanied her
father who made her go back to England for her safety.
Now Mina is alone, living with her uncle, his two daughters
and his new wife. She can't believe her father has died and
is overcome with grief. But than a handsome but mysterious
gentleman comes looking for her asking about the same
scrolls her father was looking for and found. Lord Alexander
wants to purchase these priceless artifacts from her, as he
believes she has them in her possession. Mina tells him
otherwise. Even though he doesn't believe her, he feels a
connection with her and decides to woo her, which leads to a
sensual courtship between the two. But there is another dark
immortal called the Dark Bride who is killing innocents and
wants to make Marcus her king. Marcus must try and stop this
evil creature and protect Mina before he is consumed by the
dark madness that he can barely escape.
Kim Lenox returns with her second book in her Novel of the
Shadow Guards with SO STILL THE NIGHT, an atmospheric
Victorian paranormal about a group of people who straddle
the line between good and evil. The Shadow Guards lurk in
the shadows but keep up a façade in polite company. Marcus
is one of these immortals torn between what is right and
what is wrong. He doesn't want to give in to his dark side
and there are a few close calls on his end, if not for Mina
who arrives to save him.
Mina is a, intelligent and mature heroine who knows the
world is a sinister place. She longs for Marcus even though
she is not sure she can trust him. And when he shows her his
true side, she must come to terms with him or everything
they have work towards will be destroyed. There is also a
great deal of tension and suspense and the final outcome is
not certain, especially when Marcus's paper eating, snake
loving sister, Selene comes to assassinate him.
SO STILL THE NIGHT is a haunting read that will have you
looking over your shoulder and jumping at your own shadow.
Marcus Helios was a member of the Shadow Guard until one
reckless act changed it all. His hope for salvation lies in
an ancient scroll, which is now in the possession of an
enigmatic beauty named Mina, who has no intention of handing
it over.
But someone else has designs on the mystery
of the scrolls, and on Mark. She is Jack the Ripper’s jilted
bride, whose own dark secrets will challenge the powers of
everyone in her reach...
