L.A. interior decorator Lacy Fields is showing her newest client, Cassie Crawford, the end results of a complete penthouse renovation. During the meeting, Cassie suddenly acts strangely before keeling over. Lacy does her best to revive Cassie while summoning help but Cassie dies. When the police learn that Cassie has been poisoned, Lacy is the first suspect but only briefly. Next on their list is Lacy's good friend, Molly Archer, whose relationship with Cassie's billionaire husband appears suspicious.
As Lacy begins to look into Cassie's life, she learns that all is not sunshine and roses in Cassie's marriage. Despite being married to a billionaire, Cassie worked part-time as a college fundraiser. As Lacy probes Cassie's past, her family gets involved in the investigation, some willingly and some less so. Balancing a career, a doctor husband and three kids makes it challenging to also be an amateur sleuth but Lacy manages.
Did Roger Crawford decide to save the money a divorce would cost him? Questions arise when Lacy learns of a friendship Cassie had with another man. Was Cassie having an affair? Would her supposed lover or her husband kill her over it? Does a long-ago death in Cassie's past have anything to do with her murder? When another murder occurs, Lacy knows that no one is safe until the killer is uncovered. She doesn't anticipate just how close to home the danger will come.
Filled with brand name mentions, A JOB TO KILL FOR is definitely fluffy at times, but don't let the fluff fool you. Lacy is a determined heroine, willing to do what it takes to clear her friend's name and protect her family. Readers shouldn't have any problem picking up the series without reading the first book; I was in the same situation and had no troubles. Ms. Kaplan has created an enjoyable sleuth in Lacy Fields. This series should appeal to fans of cozies and amateur detective stories.
When Lacy's beautiful
young client Cassie Crawford drops dead after a sip of tea
in her newly decorated L.A. penthouse, Lacy once again finds
herself in the midst of murder. She's stunned when suspicion
lands on her own best friend, hot Hollywood casting agent
Molly Archer -- whose "friendship" with Cassie's billionaire
mogul husband brings her to the attention of the
LAPD.
Lacy will have to set aside seeking antiques to hunt
down a dangerous killer. But this time, she's not alone.
Sleuthing becomes a family affair: her son, Grant, works
underground (literally) at UCLA to help her;
fifteen-year-old Ashley is consoled by celebrities when her
mom is hauled off by cops; Lacy's husband, Dan, provides
forensics; and even little six-year-old Jimmy helps Mom find
a murderer.
From a rough-and-tumble biker with a heart of
gold to a relentless university fund-raiser, Lacy will
follow every one of Cassie Crawford's precarious footsteps
in order to clear her best friend's name. But by doing so,
will she put her own family in the path of a desperate
killer?
Here is glorious mystery entertainment from a
dazzling new star in the suspense firmament.
