Deidra MacKay is a witch who has the gift of communicating with animals. Instead of bringing her joy though, her gift has done nothing but cause her misery. As a young girl, she learns her ancestor made a pact for the magic with a baobhan sith (a blood witch or vampire). Since a baobhan sith gave her family their magic, she wonders if the creature can also reverse her magic. When a witch hunter comes looking for her, the fear of burning drives Deidra to take up the hunt for the baobhan sith, leading her straight to Stephen Ross.
Crippled as a young man, Stephen Ross has now become a bitter recluse who lives alone in the mountains, away from the pitying eyes of his family and friends. When Deidra arrives at his home looking for a baobhan sith, he becomes intrigued with her story. If a blood vampire could cure Deidra of her powers, then perhaps one could heal him and make him whole again. Joining her on her mission to find the blood witch, Stephen never imagined the feelings he would begin to have for Deidra, but he's not the only one who wants her. A witch hunter is determined to persecute Deidra, and if he gets to her before they can find the baobhan sith, Stephen may lose more than he ever thought possible.
MY IMMORTAL PROTECTOR was a captivating read. Jen Holling has woven a compelling tale full of hope and determination. You can't help but empathize with Diedra and Stephen's pain as they both struggle with their demons, the internal ones and those of the human variety. As an animal lover, I can't even begin to imagine the pain Deidra went through whenever she ignored an animal seeking her help. Holling describes Stephen's back pain in such detail that you can practically feel the pain radiate off the pages. The complex characters along with the unique and engaging storyline make this book a must read for all paranormal lovers. I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series.
