Arriving at 40 with two kids and a divorce is enough to drive Jackie Laurens to do something unexpected. On the premise that she's going on a relaxing girl vacation with her best friend, Anne, Jackie ends up going to Hawaii alone. There she meets a new, exciting and, did I mention, younger man named Kai.
Jackie's life tumbles as she tries to discover who she is post-divorce and what (and who) she wants in her future. One thing is for certain, she wants to be happy. It seems her happiness lies in Hawaii. Traveling back and forth three times, the last being due to a tragedy, she decides what's best for her, only to find out that her mind is made up for her in the end.
This is a very introspective novel and not at all what I thought it would be; however, I found it interesting to see the thoughts of this woman and watch as she discovers her strengths. Jackie remains true to herself and finds out what it truly means to grow up. I really enjoyed this character and her thoughts about life and love. This review is from the Trade edition.
Jacqueline Laurens is a newly-single mom, and the first of
her married friends to get divorced. Jackie reluctantly goes
to Hawaii to celebrate her 40th birthday only to fall for a
much younger man.
Her friends in Seattle all wanted Jackie to have a great
birthday, but a sexy surf instructor isn't exactly what they
had in mind when they told her to have fun. Now that
Jackie's back home, will she be able to keep her friends and
the new romance alive, or will something have to give?
