Chase is a young man with a diploma from the School of Hard
Knocks. After the tragic deaths of both of his parents, he
ended up being raised by his renegade grandfather Jonah.
Jonah is a hardened criminal who's made a life out of
putting together strings of thieves to pull off heists.
He's cold, heartless and has no value for human life. After
Chase witnesses Jonah make a kill in cold blood, Chase
decides to vanish and make a new life for himself.
Chase makes his way to Mississippi where works as a "grease
monkey" and a getaway driver. His ability to soup-up a car
is legendary. He gets involved in some small heists. When
one goes mildly wrong, he's apprehended by a very cute,
local cop -- Lila. Lila is on to him and his ways but is
still smitten. The two end up marrying and Chase tries to
live the straight life until Lila falls victim to the low-
life thieves Chase used to run with. Suddenly, he's thrust
into his old nasty, underground world in an effort to solve
a new crime, on his terms and with the help of his hardened
grandfather.
Tom Piccirilli's writing style is refreshing. He
knows how to pack a lot of description, emotion and
suspense into a short, pithy sentence. This book is about
as fast-paced a Chase's souped-up getaway cars. The reader
makes off with the "goods" in this read because it's a gem.
Chase was raised as a getaway driver by his grandfather,
Jonah, a con man feared by even the hardened career
criminals who make up his crew. But when Jonah crosses the
line and murders one of his own, Chase goes solo, stealing
cars and pulling scores across the country….And then he
meets Lila, a strong-willed deputy sheriff with a
beguiling smile who shows him what love can be. Chase is
on the straight and narrow for the first time in his life—
until tragedy hits, and he must reenter the dark world of
grifters and crooks. Now Chase is out for revenge—and
he’ll have to turn to the one man he hates most in the
world. Only Jonah can teach Chase how to become a stone-
cold killer. But even as the two men work together, Chase
knows that their unresolved past will eventually lead them
to a showdown of their own.
