Fantasy Urban

Mercy Thompson lives in a world where the Native Americans don't live on reservations but the fae or fairy do. When her mentor, Zee calls on her for help, Mercy will don the skin of the coyote and use her abilities to help identify a killer.

Zee takes Mercy to the reservation and takes her to the homes of several fae that have been killed. The fae are particular about who enter the reservation and what they see while there. Mercy finds herself seeing things that she shouldn't.

Mercy is able to identify the killer. When Zee and his friend Mike go to the home, they find the killer already dead. The police had been called and find Zee there.

Mercy is told by all the authorities of the fae that she should give up the investigation. However, Mercy's loyalty and belief in Zee make that impossible.

Mercy will annoy many fae, the werewolves, and other groups as her investigation into the killer's death leads her closer to the truth that they wish to remain hidden.

Thanks to her friends and the aid of some magical objects, Mercy will manage to expose the real killer and obtain Zee's release.

This is the third in the series of Mercy Thompson and my introduction to them. Since I'm not a big fan of werewolves and shapeshifters, I was a little skeptical when I started reading. As the story progressed, I found myself engrossed in the story. There were no long, rambling, unnecessary explanations of how and why to bore the reader. Instead, the explanations were kept short and succinct.

The main focus in on the plot and the characters. The author is able to place her unusual characters in a fairly normal setting; making it probable that the situations could exist in the readers world. The reader is able to slip seamlessly into the world the author has built and find it believable to be friends with werewolves, a shapeshifter and to encounter the fae with regularity.

Fans of urban fantasy should seek these books out and revel in the stories.
