Thorn St. Croix is a stone mage who once saved the lives of
the residents of Mineral City. As their savior, she has
been partially accepted into their society. Yet, live
cannot remain on an even keel.
First, the society of Mages has sent an emissary whose
purpose in coming is cloaked in mystery. Second, she has
to contend with a Dragon whos bonds have been loosened and
again threatens the city she defends. Third, some of the
humans she defends are beginning to change. No longer
human, not mage and not quite seraph, Thorn will have to
save her city from an evil that eclipses what they
encountered the last time she saved them.
The story is set in a small town that has barely survived
the devastation of the fight between a fallen seraph and
those who wanted to destroy him. Mineral City is caught in
an ice age which causes the city to have very few amenities
for its residents. Thorn likes the life she has
established here and doesn't like to have it threatened
once again.
This was a rather confusing tale that had the seraphs and
cherubim of the Lord still active in a land that has
managed to bind the devil after many battles and the loss
of thousands of lives. Thorn is caught in a situation
where she doesn't know if she is being used or is actively
leading the fight that Mineral City faces once again. She
is forced to make decisions without a complete knowledge of
the situation and without the training she should have
received as a mage.
Fans of dark urban fantasy will enjoy the atmosphere and
continuing battle between good and evil.
In a post-apocalyptic ice age, neomage Thorn St. Croix was
nearly driven insane by her powers. She lived as a fugitive,
disguised as a human and married to a human man, channeling
her gifts for war into stone-magery. When she was
discovered, her friends and neighbors accepted her, but
warily. Not so the mage who arrives from the Council of
Seraphs, who could be her greatest ally-or her most
dangerous foe. And when it's revealed that her long-gone
sister, Rose, is still alive, Thorn must make a choice-and
risk her own life in the process.
