Sin, a Sumerian god in ancient times, is yet another casualty of Artemis. Artemis, goddess of the hunt, with the help of her handmaiden, Katra, took Sin's powers and left him to die. Acheron, also known as Ash, came to his aid and turned him into a Dark-Hunter. Sin has lived many centuries as a Dark-Hunter, alone in his mission, with a reputation for brutal annihilation of demons and humans alike. Living in Las Vegas as a big casino owner, Sin meets each day resigned to his fate, with the hope that one day he will fulfill his vow of revenge on Artemis and reclaim his powers.
Fearing what Sin is capable of, Artemis sends Katra to Las Vegas to kill him. Katra, also known as Kat, observes Sin brutally decapitating a human and setting the body on fire. Ready to kill him to save the humans, Kat almost becomes a victim of a demon, but Sin comes to her rescue. She witnesses what he is truly doing, saving humanity from an evil so vile that only Sin can remove it. Kat learns of Sin's suffering, understands his mission and easily falls in love with him.
Sin has a burden to carry. Once the god of fertility and the moon, Sin, with his brother, Zakar's help, buried gallu in a sealed chamber. Now the gallu are about to escape and Sin is the only one who can save mankind. Demons are holding Zakar captive. They know that without Zakar, Sin won't be able to stop them from freeing the gallu. It's up to Sin to find a way to keep the chamber sealed. To do so, he must enlist the help of Artemis and Kat, the two women who can destroy him. Sin must trust Kat. To prove his trust and his love for her, he reveals to her a way to kill him. She in return tells him how to take away her powers. Kat wonders if their love can survive her secret, a secret that can only crush Sin and make him hate her forever.
DEVIL MAY CRY brings Kat back from a previous story. Sin and Kat fight for what they believe in, sacrificing all in the name of love. The dialogue is great, the passion a must for Kenyon's stories. I was excited to learn more background about Ash, and more of the twisted tale of the bond between Ash and Artemis. My bookshelf is growing with Kenyon's series. I'll keep dusting off space for more to come.
