Aspen is making the most of her teenage years, spending her days thinking of fashion, her nomination for Homecoming Queen and her hot boyfriend, Lucas. In fact, as with most teenagers, she's more than a little self-obsessed.
But then her whole life goes awry, starting with her failure to nab the Homecoming nomination (which she loses to her arch-rival, Angel). Then Lucas loses the Homecoming King nomination to Rand -- a guy with a head full of curls and what she calls a "D-lister" at school. Her whole world is upside down.
Then Angel goes missing, and Aspen is having a hard time taking the situation seriously. Especially when she's having her own problems. Someone filled her locker with porn, wrote terrible things about her on the bathroom mirror and her hot boyfriend Lucas is suddenly AWOL. As the situation escalates, Aspen is spending more time with Rand, and even though he's a D-lister, there seems to be a weird spark between them.
They didn't write teen books like this when I was in high school -- and it's a darned shame. And while I gotta admit this is just another version of nerd turns into hottie, it's a darned good one. Aspen does some serious readjustment on how she views life (which involves finally looking away from mirrors and her wardrobe) and becomes a person you can like. Snappy dialogue + good characterization + fun story = a terrific teen read!
All that matters is what's inside...as long as there's a
tiara on the outside.
The flawless Aspen Brooks was born to be Homecoming Queen.
Naturally she's dating the most popular guy in school, and
she's blessed with stunning good looks, excellent style,
and mega brains. She's got the crown in the bag.
So why is the tiara being placed on the skanky head of
cheerleader Angel Ives? The confusion only grows after
ultra-dork Rand Bachrach is crowned king. To Aspen's shock
and horror, Angel actually accuses her of being behind
this. Whatevs!
But then something goes terribly, terribly wrong. Strange
things start happeningβeven stranger than Angel beating
Aspen. Now someone's leaving her threatening messages and
slashing her tires. She's sure it's that beyotch Angel
doing these things. And if Angel wants war, by Dooney &
Bourke she'll get one.
