Nestled in the tiny town of Rossmore in the middle of the Whitethorn Woods in Ireland is St. Ann's well. From near and far, those looking for answers to their prayers come to pay homage to the saint in hopes of having their requests granted. When the talk of a highway threatens its very existence, the townsfolk take sides as to whether the town's progression or the saint's well should prevail. Stuck right in the middle is a young priest, Father Flynn, who is trying to be politically correct by not taking sides although his personal opinion may not be what is expected of a man in his position.
As each person in Rossmore relates his or her story as to the impact this well has had on their life, the validity of this saint's influence on the community is quite overwhelming. While the townsfolk jockey for position, it seems to bring out the best and the worse in them as land is sold in expectation of big profits and honor and loyalty are put to the test. Families are torn apart as betrayal and greed become the norm and values are put into question as the town officials try to make the best decision for everyone. At the center of all this is the age old question of whether taking a step forward is truly progress or is losing the past the price that must be paid for growth?
