Romance Suspense | Suspense

Young girls from well-to-do families are the targets of a serial killer who dubs himself the School Girl Slayer. While the media and law enforcement focus their efforts on finding the man, copycat slayings are taking place -- the victims are also young girls, but unknown and apparently unmourned. Detective Evan Crosby makes it his mission to find out who's killing them, but he seems to find more questions than clues. Annie McCall, a criminal profiler, does her best to help her new love, Evan, work through the case while undertaking a very personal investigation of her own. Her former fiancé, Dylan Shields, was ambushed in a stakeout gone bad two years ago, and his killer never found. With Evan's encouragement and the support of Dylan's family, most of whom are also involved in law enforcement, Annie hopes she can find some closure and move on with Evan. The two cases seem unrelated on the surface, but may have more in common than either Annie or Evan suspects. The final book in Stewart's "Dead" series (DEAD WRONG, DEAD CERTAIN, DEAD EVEN) will not disappoint her fans. Once again, she provides more than one mystery plot, weaving threads in and out to create a complex tapestry that will keep readers guessing. Besides answering the questions surrounding Dylan Shields' death, which was a major factor in the first book, we get a chance to catch up on what some of the characters from previous stories are doing now. Many readers will also be able to identify with Evan and Annie's struggle to balance their professional and personal lives.

SUMMARY

Two years ago, a major FBI undercover drug deal suddenly went south - and special agent Dylan Shields went down in a hail of bullets. When the dust cleared, his fellow agent (and fiance) Anne Marie McCall was left alone with too many unanswered questions and nothing to do but hit the job as hard as she could to dull the pain. Only now is she beginning to ease up on her punishing routine as a Bureau profiler and starting to let some light in again. And, Detective Evan Crosby had a lot to do with drawing Annie back into life, and she's not about to let her chance at happiness with him slip away. But before she can embrace a bright new future, she must grapple with the dangerous past whose demons of doubt and suspicion won't let her sleep at night... and whose dead will never rest in peace until someone digs up the truth and deals out the payback. That means going places where no one - including the FBI - wants Annie to be and cutting through a minefield of smoke and mirrors, politics and intimidation, dirty tricks and deadly threats, in order to make a cold case hot enough to get the right people sweating. The harder Annie squeezes, the more blood, lies, and betrayal she wrings out... and the closer she comes to connecting a face to the trigger finger that blew away her dreams - and Dylan Shields. What she doesn't know is that the killer she's closing in on is looking for closure too. The kind that only Annie's death can bring.
