Young girls from well-to-do families are the targets of a serial killer who dubs himself the School Girl Slayer. While the media and law enforcement focus their efforts on finding the man, copycat slayings are taking place -- the victims are also young girls, but unknown and apparently unmourned.
Detective Evan Crosby makes it his mission to find out who's killing them, but he seems to find more questions than clues. Annie McCall, a criminal profiler, does her best to help her new love, Evan, work through the case while undertaking a very personal investigation of her own. Her former fiancรฉ, Dylan Shields, was ambushed in a stakeout gone bad two years ago, and his killer never found. With Evan's encouragement and the support of Dylan's family, most of whom are also involved in law enforcement, Annie hopes she can find some closure and move on with Evan. The two cases seem unrelated on the surface, but may have more in common than either Annie or Evan suspects.
The final book in Stewart's "Dead" series (DEAD WRONG, DEAD CERTAIN, DEAD EVEN) will not disappoint her fans. Once again, she provides more than one mystery plot, weaving threads in and out to create a complex tapestry that will keep readers guessing. Besides answering the questions surrounding Dylan Shields' death, which was a major factor in the first book, we get a chance to catch up on what some of the characters from previous stories are doing now. Many readers will also be able to identify with Evan and Annie's struggle to balance their professional and personal lives.
