Nina Robertson epitomizes the single thirty year old woman
who's having a running battle with her priorities. Lucky for
her she has her best friends Unity and Brooke to help her
with the more difficult decisions. In the beginning she
appears to be a rather pathetic runner-up to the better
things in life. But then you get to know the real Nina. Nina
is trying to find herself and unfortunately she seems to be
looking in all the wrong places. Her lack of self-confidence
and self-worth has lead to some rather unfortunately choices
and actions including that of trying on her cousin Celie's
bridal gown at Celie's shower. Trying it on was bad enough
but getting caught with the gown and tiara on -- well you get
the picture, embarrassing doesn't come close. Celie and Nina
have a very competitive relationship and their latest
challenge is who wins the marriage race. It looked like Nina
was going to win that one but her engagement was cut short.
So now Nina is going to turn a new leaf. She is up for a
promotion at work. Her sex life has become rather
untraditional with the introduction of motorcycling hunk
Dante. Dante is going to be her fling and he fits the bill
perfectly since he is a drifter who leaves for the next
place when the impulse hits him. Life becomes complicated
when the fiancé returns, Nina's newest client is a pain in
the butt and her competitor for the promotion is playing
dirty. What appeared to be a simple case of turning over a
new leaf becomes an intriguing foray into an amazing adventure.
When I first starting reading this book by Llewellyn I
thought it was going to be just another chick-lit, funny and
cute, sexy and sassy, irreverent and charming but with no
real meat. By the time I got to page 20 I was reminded of
the old adage -- don't judge a book by its cover. The story
of Nina and her struggles as a single woman trying to make
her mark in the world hits home on many levels. Having a
career and a personal life is a juggling act. Nina uses
humor and sarcasm to get her through the rough patches and
where you once though of her as trivial you learn to respect
her as she learns to respect herself. Kimberly Llewellyn has
written a smart intuitive book about women today -- so get it
and enjoy.
It's not bad enough her cousin's stealing her thunder.
She's also stealing her dress.
Who doesn't love a wedding? Nina Robertson sure doesn't,
since the wedding in question is that of her hyper-
competitive, catty cousin Celia. And Nina's own engagement
hit the brakes (and then went over a cliff) not too long
ago. And the bitter icing on the cake? Celia will be
wearing Nina's dream dress. Meanwhile, Nina's no-good ex
is conducting a shock-and-awe campaign on her social life.
And an underhanded co-worker, along with a notoriously
difficult movie star, are making her public-relations job
a nightmare. Although Nina might not be headed down the
aisle, she's definitely headed downhill.
