Lacey Smithsonian's beat is fashion. As a reporter, this was not her first choice, but when the previous fashion writer died in her chair, the editor took one look at Lacey and decided she should have the job. Since Lacey is quite sophisticated in the fashion department, she decides to make the best of her new position. While writing her column, Fashion Bites, Lacey runs into a little trouble, meeting murderers along the way. Her new boyfriend, Vic, an ex-cop, begs her to stay out of trouble, at least for a week, until they can go away for their very first romantic weekend. Since her only upcoming story is about an ugly duckling turned supermodel, Lacey feels safe promising to stay out of harm's way.
Amanda Manville's beauty is the product of a makeover on national television. Plastic surgery gave her a perfect face, but it took away the beauty of her soul. Amanda is now a supermodel super diva, and when Lacey interviews her for the upcoming release of her clothing line, Amanda tells Lacey that someone is out to kill her. Seeing her in action, Lacey feels that anyone would be justified in wanting to kill the woman, but doesn't actually believe that anyone is trying to kill her. She does, however, vaguely promise to look into Amanda's death, should it occur. When Amanda is not only killed, but the killer uses Lacey's car during the murder, she's drawn into the investigation on a personal level.
Her romantic weekend ruined by an untimely visit from her mother and sister, Lacey is drawn further into the situation when she thwarts the killer's attempt on another life. She reluctantly allows her family to help, and finds that the killer is closer to home than she thought.
An unexpected twist lends this mystery a very satisfying ending. I recommend HOSTILE MAKEOVER, a totally delightful Crime of Fashion mystery. It's a fun and witty read.
If looks could kill this makeover might be
murder...
With a messy murder in the hothouse world of haute couture
just behind her and a long-delayed romantic weekend just
ahead of her, Lacey Smithsonian promises her once-a-cop-
always-a-cop boyfriend that this weekend she'll
definitely stay out of trouble. But of course
trouble follows Lacey like static cling. She's scheduled to
interview reality TV makeover success story Amanda
Manville, now a supermodel diva from Hell. The inside
skinny on Amanda is that she's a prima prima dona
who might have a deadly secret. But the daunting
Frandendiva begs Lacey to help stop and elusive and
frightening stalker--as if she doesn't have enough trouble
on her hands, with her mother and her sister bent on an
extreme makeover on Lacey's life. Because being sensible is
for someone who wears ugly shoes, Lacey steps
smartly into the path of drive-by shootings, speeding
stolen cars (her own), and the office jinx. And she learns
that sometimes makeovers can be murder...
