Since the beginning of Alera's collective memory, its
citizens have channeled the power of the Furies (the
elemental beings that live in water, fire, air, earth,
metal and wood) to bolster their physical and emotional
strength. With the help of their Furies, Alerians have been
able to keep their enemies from encroaching on their lands.
Now a civil war threatens the country. Many of the high
lords have begun to doubt the ability of the First Lord,
and there are many who would take his place. An ancient
enemy has also spread in the Calderon Valley and is making
its way to the capital; an insidious evil that attacks from
within. By the time the Alerians realize that danger is
threatening them, it's already arrived and it may be too
late to be successfully fought.
Tavi, a young spy in training and with no fury power of his
own, finds himself in the middle of a maelstrom that
threatens to destroy all he holds dear. A young man, with
only his wits to guide him and a small group of friends he
can depend on, holds the key to his country's salvation in
his hands.
ACADEM'S FURY is book two of The Codex Alera. Even though
I've been reading Butcher's excellent Harry Dresden series
for years, I didn't buy book one, THE FURIES OF CALDERON
when it came out last year because I didn't want to start
another hardcover series. What a fool I was! Butcher is
rock solid here. This is a series completely different from
the Dresden books (apples and oranges), but no less
compelling. It follows not only Tavi's story but several
other strong storylines. The chapters alternate back and
forth between the actions of the three different groups.
Battles are fought, plots hatched, assassinations and
kidnappings planned and carried out. The tension was so
thick sometimes, I found myself actually gripping the book.
Fantasy fans will not be disappointed.
For one thousand years, the people of Alera have united
against the aggressive and threatening races that inhabit
the world, using their unique bond with the Furies--
elementals of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Metal. But now,
the unity of the Alerians hangs in precarious balance. The
First Lord of Alera has fallen in his efforts to protect
his people from the vicious attacks of their enemies. Now,
the fate of the Alerians lies in the hands of Tavi, a young
man who must use all of his courage and resourcefulness to
save his people--and himself.
