In the twelfth century Region of Chiarrai -- modern day Kerry, Ireland -- Sorcerer Hoyt Mac Cionaoith calls out to, and damns the demon responsible for the death of his twin brother, Cian. The demon is a beautiful female named Lillith, and she is a vampyre. Cian comes to Lillith's aid and attacks Hoyt, but Hoyt runs a dagger through his brother right before Cian sinks his fangs into Hoyt's throat.
Hoyt is visited by the goddessMorrigan, who advises him there is a great battle for him to fight, good vs. evil, on the feast of Samhain. He must gather a Circle of Six to fight Lillith for world dominance. The circle must include himself, a sorcerer, a witch, a warrior, a scholar, a shifter of shapes, and a vampire. Morrigan shows Hoyt a vision of modern New York City where he will find his brother and learn from him. Hoyt will also find Glenna Ward, a twenty-first century witch, living in New York, who he knows from his dreams.
After saying good-bye to his family, and leaving them with protective silver shields given to him by Morrigan, Hoyt is allowed to walk through a portal one thousand years into the future, and into Cian's apartment.
Cian is wealthy, cynical, and bored. He no longer feeds from humans, but from pig's blood supplied to him by butchers. He agrees to help, and transports Hoyt and Glenna, and King, Cian's most trusted friend, to his castle in Ireland via his private jet, where the circle can train for their battle. Hoyt is dumbstruck when he realizes Cian's modernized castle was once the Mac Cionaoith's family home and fortress. Two more soon join their circle in Ireland; Moira, the scholar, and Larkin, the shifter of shapes. They are from twelfth century Geall, and have been sent by Morrigan. When Blair Murphy from Chicago arrives, the Circle of Six is complete.
Like any novel by Nora Roberts, MORRIGAN'S CROSS has the reader mesmerized from the outset of the story. The tale is complex, but easy to follow, and the characters are terrific, especially the sardonic Cian. The romance between Hoyt and Glenna is as powerful and potent as the white magic they make together. MORRIGAN'S CROSS sets up the storyline for this new trilogy and introduces the major players. It also whets your appetite for the books to follow.
