Contemporary Chick Lit

Elle Medina is a fake psychic. She doesn't know how to read your mind, tarot cards, palms, and doesn't get premonitions. But Elle does give great advice and makes some money off of her psychic phone service. In the mean time she is writing a New Age column for Santa Barbra Permanent Press. In her column she profiles new alternative healing businesses such as aura readers, acupuncturists, and pet psychics.

Before Elle met her boyfriend Merrick, real name Louis, she was engaged to another man named Louis. They were together for six years until he suddenly left her for another woman. This has left her extremely insecure and constantly worried about being cheated on or left again.

Merrick loves Elle, even if she doesn't trust him. He wants her to find more direction in her life, perhaps by getting a degree as a psychologist. Merrick works as a successful architect and has to go away for weeks at a time on jobs.

Elle's best friend Maya is getting married and Elle decides this is the perfect time for her to try out her wedding planning skills. Elle had the perfect wedding planned for herself and her ex fiancé, but now that wedding is never going to happen. Instead of being depressed about this, she works hard to make her best friend's wedding special.

During the wedding planning, psychic phone business, and column writing, a humiliating video of Elle appears on the internet. Any other woman would freak out and hide in her room for days, not Elle. She faces the world head on without fear or humiliation. How did this video end up on the internet? Who put it there? Will this spell disaster or success for Elle's career?

I loved TRUE LIES OF A DRAMA QUEEN. This book was hilarious and I absolutely loved Elle's character. I loved how she doesn't take life too seriously and doesn't let anything faze her. The things that happened to her would make a regular person crumble and hide, but Elle faces life head on with no worries. If you are looking for another book by this author try Hand-Me-Down which is also a great read. Lee Nichols writes great chick lit and I can see many more books in her future. Trust me, I'm a psychic!

SUMMARY

Some true lies of a drama queen:

My name is Elle Medina.
(Absolutely true!)

I'm a professional psychic.
(Completely accurate. Except for the "professional" part . . . and the "psychic" part.)

I'm planning my best friend's wedding.
(Maya only thinks she's planning it.)

I'm a serious journalist.
(I cover crystal therapy for the local weekly rag.)

I live with my boyfriend, Merrick.
(I'm pretty sure he's still my boyfriend.)

She may be lovely and talented but Elle Medina's phone psychic business is sputtering, her boyfriend thinks she's attending graduate school (not exactly) and she's about to ruin her best friend's wedding. Things can't get worse. Can they?

Of course they can. (For example, her little striptease is currently playing on the Internet.)

Join Elle as she seeks out the culprit responsible for her unexpected unclothes star turn, strenuously avoids higher learning and discovers that coming of age is not a destination, but a journey... and she's having a hard time staying on the road.
