Cassandra, fairly new in the witness protection system, is Priestess Cassandra, voodoo priestess and shop owner in New Orleans. She's also a Jager-Sucher (Hunter-Searcher), an operative of a secret government agency that hunts monsters. She's come to Haiti to find a voodoo practitioner who can supposedly raise the dead -- not just as zombies, but as actual, living flesh.
Cassandra hires Devon Murphy, local guide and fortune hunter, to take her into the jungles of Haiti to find the voodoo priest. The attraction between Cassandra and Devon is instant and mutual, the passion just about unstoppable. But Devon doesn't know that Cassandra really wants to find the voodoo priest not to kill him, but to find out how to raise her daughter from the grave. And Cassandra doesn't know that Devon is really after a huge diamond the priest is supposed to have.
I really liked MIDNIGHT MOON, Ms. Handeland's latest story about the Jager-Suchers. Cassandra is a heroine every mother can identify with, and Devon is the bad boy every woman remembers -- or wishes she did. The storyline is fresh and unusual, with realistic ancillary characters. It kept me wondering just exactly how it would work out all the way to the end. Familiar with Ms. Handeland's previous novels, I expected this to be a very good read -- and I was right!
